Family Visas

Family-based Green Cards allow U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (LPRs) to sponsor their relatives for permanent residency, bringing the dream of family unity closer to reality. A Family-Based Green Card allows eligible relatives of U.S. Citizens and Legal Permanent Residents to live and work permanently in the United States.
Family-based Green Cards are divided into two main categories: Immediate Relatives of U.S. Citizens and Family Preference Categories.

Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens enjoy special immigration priority, which means they are not subject to annual numerical limits or priority dates.

Family Preference Categories apply to more distant relatives of U.S. citizens and certain relatives of LPRs. These categories are subject to annual numerical limits and priority dates, which determine the waiting time for visa availability.

Priority dates are crucial for family preference categories, as they determine the order in which Green Card applications are processed. Each month, the U.S. Department of State publishes the Visa Bulletin, which shows the cut-off dates for visa availability in each preference category.
