J-1 Exchange Visitor

Description

The J-1 visa is available to foreign nationals looking to participate in an exchange program through a sponsor who is approved by the U.S. Department of State. Exchange visitors may include: professors, scholars, research assistants, students, trainees, teachers, specialists, nannies/au pairs, and camp counselors, among others. Exchange visitor programs are designed to encourage the interchange of persons, knowledge and skills.

Exchange visitors may be eligible to work under the J-1 category but must be authorized under the terms of the exchange program.

Accompanying or following dependents are required to apply for a J-2 Visa.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Has a valid Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status (DS-2019) form from an approved sponsor
  • Has a residence in a country outside the United States and has no intention of abandoning it

Duration of Status

Foreign nationals must be enrolled in an approved program to maintain J-1 Status.

Future Eligibility

Foreign nationals on J-1 Status in the United States are eligible to apply for certain Change of Status or for Adjustment of Status, given that they meet the requirements.

Conrad 30 Waiver Program

Due to a shortage of qualified doctors in medically underserved areas, J-1 Medical Doctors may apply for a waiver for the 2-year residence requirement upon completion of the J-1 exchange visitor program. For more information about the program you can visit the dedicated USCIS page here.
