  • The profession qualifies under the regulations
  • The position in the United States requires a NAFTA professional

  • You have the qualifications to practice in the profession

Length of Stay

TN visa holders are typically granted initial stays of up to three years, with the possibility of extensions in increments of up to three years. However, the TN visa holder must maintain a residence in Canada or Mexico and intend to return there at the end of their authorized stay.

How to Apply for a TN-NAFTA Visa

The TN-NAFTA visa allows qualified Canadian and Mexican professionals to work in the United States in specific occupations. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply for this visa:

For Canadian Citizens

Step 1

Determine Eligibility: Ensure that your profession is listed under the NAFTA agreement and that you meet the educational and experience requirements.

Step 2

Prepare Documentation:

Gather the necessary documents, including:

    • Proof of Canadian citizenship (e.g., passport).
    • A job offer letter from a U.S. employer detailing your role, responsibilities, and duration of employment.
    • Evidence of your qualifications (degrees, diplomas, licenses, etc.) that demonstrate you meet the requirements for your profession.

Step 3

Apply at the Port of Entry: Canadian citizens do not need a visa to enter the U.S. as a TN professional. Instead, you can apply directly at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) port of entry. Present your documentation to the CBP officer for review.

Step 4

Receive TN Status: If approved, you will be granted TN status, allowing you to work in the U.S. for the specified employer.
